Change Gas and Electricity Suppliers
This may sounds like a stupid question, but this is the first time I have lived on my own. I’m sure I could find another provider that is cheaper than my current one. How do I change Gas and Electricity Suppliers Do I phone around for quotes, how do I compare suppliers? Any recommendations? Is it easy to switch over? As I live in a shared ownership home would i need to consult the housing association before switching suppliers? Advice would be much appreciated!
It is quite easy to switch your gas or electricity suppliers, but presumably when you switch, you want to ensure that you get a better deal than your current deal or `tariff.
Before you can compare utility providers, the first thing you need to do is get as much information about your current tariff as you can. You should be able to obtain a copy of your Annual Energy Consumption Statement. Use it to find out how many kilowatts of gas and electricity you used over the previous year.
Next you need to visit a free online energy comparison service so you can compare your home energy prices with all the prices available on the market. These usually have wizards and calculators into which you just insert your home post code (since prices differ by region or area and not all gas or electricity suppliers will provide services to your locality).
You also need to enter the information you get from your energy consumption statement which includes the details of your current supplier, the particular tariff you are on and your annual energy or resource consumption. With some facilities you can use the amount you have spent of your utilities instead of your annual energy consumption.
You may also have to indicate which kind of meter you have and how you make your payments e.g. key, direct debit, payment on receipt of bill etc.
Once this information is all fed into the calculator it will calculate how much all the suppliers available in your area would charge you for the same (or as close as possible) services so you can do a direct comparison. It will also show how much you would be charged for all the suppliers tariffs for the same amount of energy consumption. Make sure you take note of the supplier and the exact tariff you want. Then all you need to do is click on a link to their website or phone them up.

Check a site like http://www.uswitch.com for comparisons. You’ll need to put in your current supplier, tariff and bill to get the most accurate comparisons.
When you’ve chosen, just write your meter readings down, and ring up your preferred supplier. You might even be able to do it on the Internet these days, but I personally prefer to talk to someone and hear them confirm that I’ve been switched over.
Good luck!
you can use uwitch or other web comparison sites to find the best deal in your area.you have to be up to date with your present supplier to switch (no big arrears) duel fuel on direct debit gets the best price.you do not need to inform your housing association.i found it easy to switch by phone when i found the best deal coz you definitely know it is done. i tried switching on the web but it didn`t work properly but i did find the best deal. It’s not a stupid question at all!!
You can use price comparison websites to get an idea of which company would be best for you, I think uswitch.com is the most popular. You’ll be asked for details like who is your current supplier; what tariff you’re on; whether you want "green" energy supply; how much you pay per month. Based on the info you give them, they’ll give you a list of companies that will price beat your current supplier.
After that, contact the company you’ve chosen; they’ll do the switching from your current provider. Make sure they send you a letter confirming the switch. As it’s BG, I’d keep a very close eye on what’s going on; I switched from them a few years back and they somehow managed to "cancel" my switching order!
All the best Good luck!
